In the 15th century, Burgundian dukes ruled the city and gave it a great boost culturally, architecturally and economically. Towards the end of the Middle Ages, Bruges was considered the richest city in Northern Europe. Gradually, the Zwin silted up, depriving Bruges of direct access to the sea. As a result, the Burgundian court withdrew from the city and the city became impoverished. The industrialization that emerged in the 19th century did not reach Bruges. Today, Bruges draws its advantage from this: the medieval city center with the historic old town, the archaeological finds as well as the waterways that crisscross the city result in a unique mixture that makes Bruges a visitor magnet for tourists from all over the world.
