Each of these charming rivers is different, but they have one thing in common: their continuous popularity with travellers.
The longest river to flow into the North Sea, the Rhine presents completely diverse landscapes and cultures along its 880 navigable kilometres. Between Basel in Switzerland and the river mouth into the North Sea, one could not find greater variety: the "romantic Rhine" with the legendary Lorelei, steep rocky slopes overgrown with vines and picturesque wine-growing towns, and then the Lower Rhine with its tributaries in Holland. Here, large towns, broad lowlands, fields, meadows and tree-lined banks define the landscape.
The Rhine's best-known tributary is without doubt the Moselle. This graceful river is surrounded by steep vineyards and old villages, and wine towns such as Bernkastel and Cochem, which entice you to taste their fine wines. There is just as much to see along the Neckar and the Saar: International flair in the quaint alleyways of Heidelberg and unique landscapes such as the famous Saar Loop await you.
